Connect ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers over HTTPS from OpenAI’s side, which is exactly what the Scrive MCP is. ChatGPT calls these integrations plugins (earlier versions called them connectors, then apps). There are two routes.

Developer mode is required in ChatGPT

Adding your own MCP server as a plugin is a developer-mode feature, available on the web for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin has to enable developer mode first, under Workspace settings → Permissions & roles.

Option A: ChatGPT

1. Turn on developer mode. Open Settings → Security and login and switch on Developer mode. The option to add your own plugin stays hidden until you do.

2. In Settings, select Plugins in the sidebar, then the + button to create a new plugin.

3. Fill in the form:

   • Name: Scrive
   • Connection: Server URL, https://mcp.scrive.com/mcp
   • Authentication: OAuth

   Tick the box confirming you trust the server and select Create.

4. ChatGPT opens the Scrive sign-in. Sign in and approve access. The Scrive tools are listed on the plugin once the connection is established.

5. Start a new chat; chats that were already open do not pick up the plugin. Open the + menu, choose Developer mode and enable Scrive. Then ask:

   Which of my Scrive documents are still waiting to be signed?

ChatGPT asks for confirmation before running tools that write. Keep that on for start_signing, remind_document, cancel_document, start_flow and delete_flow_draft.

OAuth client credentials

ChatGPT normally connects without them. If sign-in fails with a client registration error, see When you need a client ID and secret.

Option B: Codex

Codex reads remote MCP servers from ~/.codex/config.toml and handles the OAuth sign-in with codex mcp login.

1. Add the server:

   codex mcp add scrive --url https://mcp.scrive.com/mcp

   This writes the following block, which you can also add by hand:

   ~/.codex/config.toml

   [mcp_servers.scrive]
   url = "https://mcp.scrive.com/mcp"

2. Sign in:

   codex mcp login scrive

   Your browser opens the Scrive sign-in. Approve access and return to the terminal. codex mcp list shows the server as authenticated.

3. Start Codex and ask:

   List my Scrive documents modified this month.

To sign out, run codex mcp logout scrive; to remove the server, codex mcp remove scrive.

Good to know

• create_document, set_file and add_document_to_draft open a file picker panel in clients that support MCP Apps. Codex has no panel UI, so create documents from templates with create_from_template instead.
• One connection serves one Scrive account. Each colleague signs in with their own.
